Aichi Triennare 2013 Official Goods Student Competition Report

Aichi Triennale 2010, a first-time event, attracted more than 570,000 visitors and was a grand success. For the second Triennale, slated to open on August 10th, 2013, the Creative Design City Nagoya Organizing Committee held the Aichi Triennale 2013 Official Goods Design Competition, in cooperation with Aichi Prefecture’s International Arts Festival Section of the Culture and Arts Division of the Department of Community Affairs.

Interim Assessment Meeting

Ms. Junko Suzuki, PR officer for Aichi Triennale 2013, was invited to the Interim Assessment Meeting, where she helped the participating teams make final adjustments.

Junko Suzuki : Born in Tokyo. After working for Jiji Press Ltd., Ms. Suzuki served as the first deputy spokesperson at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). She then took the position of spokesperson in charge of the Mori Art Museum prior to its opening. For the next two years she worked as the museum’s PR manager, handling duties ranging from public relation to marketing, branding and general communication. She then returned to Miraikan, where she worked for five years as PR officer and general manager of international liaisons, working in public relations, brand development and management, marketing and crisis management, while handling bidding for international conferences and facilitating international exchange.
Ms. Suzuki began working independently in 2010 and since then has been engaged in a broad range of PR services, project planning and implementation, mainly for private businesses, governmental organizations and NPOs; Presently she is on the external public relations committee for projects for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (MEXT), a senior curator at the galleries of Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (MUJI) and Advisor to Tokyo’s Bid Committee for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Public Presentation + Judgment

After the public presentation and review meeting, the joint meeting on commercializing products was held, advised by Product Designer Takashi Honda.
Thorough discussions on reappraising products, packaging and sales prices at this meeting moved the project closer to commercialization.

Joint meeting on commercialization

Takashi Honda : Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1968. After graduating from the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 1991, he worked at YAMAHA Product Design Laboratory. In 2000, he established Design Studio CRAC. By gaining insights into the lives of people and social backgrounds that change with time and by focusing on constructing an accurate hypothesis, he aims to produce a prototype design that serves as a guideline. In addition, he is also involved in product designing and brand-building in collaboration with local industries. He is a part-time professor of Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and active in a collegium known as Katachi-ken. He has won the Grand Prize in the International Design Competition ’98 KAINAN, was a runner-up in Design 21 [ CHIC CHINOIS ], and 9 of his works were selected for the Good Design Award from 1998-2008.


Product Completion and the Opening of the Aichi Triennale 2013 Official Shop

At the shop’s opening ceremony, the ribbon was cut by Nagoya Art University student Rie Furukawa, representing students who participated in the Aichi Triennale 2013 Official Objects Student Competition; Aichi Prefectural Governor Hideaki Omura; art director Taro Igarashi and artist Kenji Yanobe. The venue was filled with prospective buyers and students who had participated in the competition gave interviews to members of the media.
