ACCESS

Artist Statement

“Sunset” is a work I created in 2019 while performing street karaoke in Taipei. When I asked the people living on the street in front of Taipei’s Longshan Temple what they would want to do if there were an event in the square there, the request was “Karaoke!” So we started by trying to hold a karaoke competition. As soon as I asked what kind of karaoke songs they wanted to sing, they wanted songs about the history of Taiwan, especially Taiwan’s history with Japan, and the experience was like visiting a palace of karaoke memories. For this event, I gave a lecture and performance at Miya no Watashi about the memory of the event’s songs and the site, and singing on the streets.
