We invite the guests who are involved with Horikawa River or canals in town independently. The talk would focus on unraveling the history of utilization of canals and rivers in Nagoya, and the present and future of city planning.

Takenaka Katsuyuki

Professor of Aichi Prefectural University / Geography

Based on field research and theoretical research on Mediterranean cities professor Takenaka conducts research in applied urban studies in Japan. After becoming involved in Nagoya’s Nakagawa Canal Revitalization Project, he proposed research into spatial codes to visualize the uniqueness of the region.
His main publications include “MEDITERRANEAN CITIES—People Interacting with the City” (University of Tokyo Press, 2021), “Nakagawa Canal Co-Creating from Spatial Codes—Development Communities with ‘Rashisa’ (Distinctive Characteristics)” (Kajima Institute Publishing, 2016, Editor)

Hideshima Eizo

Professor of Nagoya Institute of Technology / Civil Engineering

Professor Hideshima’s positions have included assistant at Kyoto University (1992), lecturer at Nagoya Institute of Technology (1998), JICA-dispatched long-term expert (Brazil), and researcher at Stanford University (2004); he became a full professor in 2012.
He specializes in civil public works planning, urban planning, and policy science. His publications include “Environmental Planning” (Kyoritsu Shuppan, 2008) and “Civil Engineering and Landscapes” (Gakugei Shuppansha, 2007, co-authored).
He is involved in waterside urban development, such as with the “Horikawa Urban Development Design,” “Nakagawa Canal Revitalization Plan,” and activities of “Waterside and Urban Approach Institute.” In addition, he serves as a member of Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City urban planning councils and as a director of the NPO Rescue Stock Yard.

Clemens Metzler

Illustrator, Designer

Metzler graduated from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Germany in 1993 and came to Japan in 1998.
As an illustrator, he has done numerous illustrations for Meiji-mura and Inuyama Castle, and his work also appears in magazines such as “Tarzan,” “Croissant,” and “Nikkei Otonano OFF.” Recently, he has been working with India ink and glass pen on Obara-washi paper, depicting Germany’s and Japan’s present and past, architecture, scenes and landscapes, and people’s lives.
He is a member of Nagoya Illustrators Club and Chubu Creators Club and is a part-time lecturer at Aichi Prefectural University, Aichi University of the Arts, and Daido University.
